Here’s a multi-purpose activity for students grades 7-12 that can be used to assess student understanding  of literature, as a book report assignment, or as a pre-writing assignment before writing college application essays.

On a 2 inch, 2 foot strip of adding machine tape, students use their higher order thinking skills to portray in images, words, and colors, the theme, conflict, or characters from a piece of literature, or to capture the essence of their own personalities. It’s an idea adapted from an article by Nancy J.       Students really enjoy having the opportunity to show what they know in different ways. I thoroughly enjoy seeing new ways of looking at literature. This kind of assignment helps create a space for both. Thanks for taking time to comment.
