TRANSITION from Emeritus Assembly to Commission of Experienced Teachers

The Assembly of the National Council of Teachers of English, established in 1996 to have a constituency group within NCTE where retired English language arts educators could continue to contribute to the profession in ways that work for those who are no longer working full time.

The goal was to provide an opportunity to gather annually and plan activities, share resources, prepare, propose and present sessions at the NCTE annual convention on topics of interest to the EA and to those who could benefit by our years of experience in the field,  and to mentor those following in this career path.

The EA had been inactive for a few years, but our efforts e to revitalize this powerful resource – an assembly of veteran educators did not work. We know that success during the first three years that is critical to retaining new teachers and you have just what is needed – years of experience.

On Line SharingSo, we sought a place within the Conference on English Education to have more direct contact with the colleagues who work most closely with pre-service, new teachers, and recent graduates who become K-12 classroom teachers

The experienced teachers in the Conference on English Education’s Commission for Supporting and Mentoring K-12 Teachers exists to connect retired and soon to educators to stay connected to the profession in specific ways that can help ensure the health and future of our profession.  We are working with the NCTE Council on English Educators to establish a link between those who are and recently have taught new teachers or graduate students seeking new career goals and those with experience teaching and supervising K-12 educators.

  • NCTE has approved our request for a discounted NCTE Convention registration fee! This 50% discount  option now appears on the online registration page, linked here.

We welcome you to join us as a mentor, as a contributor to the Experienced Teachers’ blog, as a presenter at NCTE Annual Conventions, and as a fellow traveler along the way during these later steps along this professional career path.

Our current project is Early Career K-12 Educators Mentorship designed to link veteran educators like yourself to those teachers just entering the profession.  The Conference on English Leadership has offered to share information about our services to their professors and student teachers.  These emerging educators will be invited to post their questions on the Teaching and Learning website and we, mentors from the CEE Commission will respond with encouragement, counsel, and recommendations based on our years of experience in the field.

If you choose not to become a mentor at this time, you still can contribute by sharing links to RESOURCES you know are valuable, and also to your own PUBLICATIONS that are available for sale on-line.  Send the links in the comments sections and we’ll get them added to our website.
