Current Events on Issues of Prejudice

You are to find news articles about a current issue of interest to you that reflect prejudice, tolerance, or intolerance in modern society. Follow the progress of the issue during the next few weeks, clipping, copying and pasting into your print or digital journal as many articles about the issue as you are able to find aiming to have six to eight articles total. Which character in our book would respond to your issue you’ve chosen to follow?  Why this character?  Do you agree/disagree?

Issues: Age, Race, Religion, Region, Nationality, Physique, Accent, Gender, Sexual Preference, Intellect, Politics, Your choice approved ahead of time.  You may choose

several different articles on the same  issue
several different articles on the same  incident
several different articles by the same columnist/writer
several different articles on different issues, but in the same publication

Due Dates:
__________ State and briefly summarize (orally) the character and issue you’ve chosen
__________ Week 1  journal entries about articles you’ve chosen that week
__________ Week 2  journal entries about articles you’ve chosen that week
__________ Week 3  journal entries about articles you’ve chosen that week
__________ FULL presentation about the issue  with visual aids and/or music

Journal Entries:

In your reading journal, note the title of the article, then write a personal response of one or two paragraphs for each reading. Also note any questions you have about the readings.

As you consider your articles be able to answer the basic 5 W’s and H questions: Who? What? When? Where? Why? How? You can complete the sentences in any way that work for you? For example, for one article you may respond to “Who’s affected?” and another article it may be “Who’s the perpetrator?” or if it’s important to your project, “Who’s the writer?”

For “How?” How does this article connect to what we’re reading in class? How does this article make you feel? How would your character treat the perpetrator(s) of this act of prejudice?
