An effective way to assess students’ ability to look closely and discover how a poem is put together is to assign them to pattern or parody the work of a published poet.  Here’s an assignment to accompany the study of lyrical poems which usually have a rhyme and rhythm pattern.  You’ll find your students also will have to stretch their vocabulary to find just the right word to express themselves within the pattern they’re modeling.
