The Handmaid’s Tale– Characters and Current Events
Literature and Life
The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood is a particularly effective text in a unit on WOMEN’S HISTORY, DYSTOPIA or one linked to CURRENT EVENTS. I’ve found the unit to be more engaging when I asked to the students to look for connections between characters, conflicts, and events in the book and those they experienced, observed or read about in the news.
This assignment, linking literature to life, helps students gain essential ELA, composition and communication skills in research and writing. Students also have opportunity to connect what they learn in History classes to what they are reading in English. Note link to Social, Economic, and Political issues.
