SPAR stands for SPontaneous ARgumentation and is a classroom strategy that can be used to meet COMMON CORE ELA standards in speaking and in writing. When teaching the fundamentals of debate or beginning a unit on controversial topics, invite students to SPAR. With practice, SPAR will enhance listening skills, help clarify thinking about controversial issues and also can prepare students to conduct research before writing persuasive or argumentative essays.
